Update: May 30, 2020
Tamron teases new FE (full-frame Sony E-Mount lens), suggesting that the Japanese remains dedicated to expanding its full-frame Sony E-Mount lineup.
On the May 27, Tamron released a video teasing a what looks like a new versatile zoom lens.
For now, that video is all information we have. In the video, we can see a blacked out shape of lens with “Coming Soon” overlay. A translation by Hauwei’s Live translate app from Japanese to English suggests, “Mirrorless, new choices.” and “One of the delicately depicts any scenery“.
There’s also an English version of the teaser uploaded by PhotoBite UK, where the text says, “Revolutionary new mirrorless lens offering performance plus versatility” and “Capture virtually every scene with just one lens“.
There’s also a link to a new Tamron’s Sony E-mount website, where Tamron reminds us of all the key features of its E-Mount lens:
- Lightweight and compact
- Short Minimum Object Distance (MOD)
- Unified system of lenses with 67mm filter size
- Designed for mirrorless cameras. Features include: Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF, Direct Manual Focus (DMF), In-camera lens correction, Camera-based lens unit firmware updates.
Based on the released pictures the lens could be a mid-range such as 24-105mm or 24-180mm. It looks too short to be telephoto lens. However, the suggests “versatility”, which could mean a wide focal distance range, such as 18-300mm. To sum up from the available information, this lens will most likely have zoom option, 67mm filter thread, short MOD, and will be lightweight & compact.
From the image provided by Tamron, we can also assume there will be a locking switch on the righthand side, similar to recently released 70-180mm f/2.8.
